René CombrinckPresident of the Christian Action for Dependence (CAD) René Combrinck is the President of the Christian Action for Dependence (CAD); a non-profit organization with 71 groups in South Africa. These groups have meetings on a weekly basis assisting people in prevention, treatment and aftercare of alcohol and drug abuse. Members are available 24h to help anyone with an addiction problem. We visit schools, Businesses, churches, organizations and work with the Department of Welfare in all the provinces to assist them with their programmes. René has done several interviews on SABC, Radio Pulpit, Radio Oranje, Luister FM PE, Radio Panorama and Overvaal Radio about his work at the CAD. René says : "Everything in life that is worth while, always comes at a price. Difference Makers do it for the love of it. They do it not to be thanked, seen or praised. Amazing! One of the few organizations I know of that do it to the example set by Jesus Christ. “Free you have received it, free you must give it” |
This humble South African man, yet committed man; to where he can make a difference assists people to come to the point of admitting that they have an addiction problem and help them to go for treatment in a rehabilitation centre. After rehab he makes sure that they are taken up in one of their groups for aftercare help. René oversees the organizing of conferences to be held every two years in the different provinces. René devotes his time and energy making sure that the day to day business of the CAD are done according to their constitution. Members are trained by him on how to utilize the intervention program as well as handling addicted persons and their families. He visits the different provinces at least once a year. He sees the patients at Aurora Clinic in Bloemfontein every three weeks to motivate them to join the CAD where they will be helped to stay sober.
René was addicted to alcohol himself and by the grace of Jesus Christ was set free in October 1977. Since then he became a member of the CAD. Fieldwork is still done by himself and he visits people who need help with addiction. He is thankful to know he helped quite a few people directly and in directly through their organization, to become sober and to be taken up in the community again. His passion is to assist people who are caught in addiction and to lead them to break permanently with their addiction. He was instrumental in taking the EE111 program into the different sections of the Kroonstad Prison. The outreach of this evangelistic course was so successful that a big number of prisoners changed their lives drastically. In 1995 René was nominated by the Residents Association to be a candidate in a municipal election in Kroonstad. That would be a test to see if the residents in that ward would accept him (as an ex-alcoholic) to represent them in council. He was fortunate to be elected with a huge majority over a well known business man. A new platform was given to him to help people with their problems on a different level.
René was nominated as a Top 100 SA Difference Maker through the visibility of the Pretoria branch of the CAD by Annetjie Jansen. Julie B Steynberg the Executive Director for Difference Makers SA was one of the speakers at a Woman’s Conference at Moreleta Park Church in Pretoria in March 2017; and met Annetjie who was a guest at the conference.
