Riekie KrauseState Advocate and Case Manager to the Thuthuzela Care Centre, Klerksdorp / Attached to the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit of the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa Riekie Krause is known in the community as someone that is dependable, trustworthy and extremely caring of the issues of women and children. Riekie sees these vulnerable members of society as her personal family and will fight to the very end to ensure they are safe and protected. At the same time, these survivors depend on, and will indeed find, Riekie ready with a word of comfort, a gentle touch or a hug in difficult times. Riekie is a ‘Warrior Women’, a modern day ‘Atillah The Hun’, and a fighter for the rights of women and children in South Africa. Riekie Krause says: “I dedicate my life to fighting for the victims of gender-based violence. As a survivor of violence myself, I appreciate the importance of achieving the main goal of the Thuthuzela Care Centres: Turning victims into survivors. I have an understanding of the trauma these victims had to endure. My experience also taught me the importance of showing these victims empathy, having patience to gain their trust, ensuring that they have confidence not only in me but in the Criminal Justice System and all its stakeholders as a whole. I take time to prepare them to testify and ensure that they understand the process of a trial as most of these victims have never seen the inside of a court room before. Despite all our efforts to display the utmost of sensitivity towards victims, the court environment is not always friendly and therefore it is important to ensure that these victims are always at ease. What happened to them was bad enough; to disclose such intimate details in court and to strangers can be just as traumatic if not more so. However, I know from working with these victims that once I gain their trust and ensure them that I am there to protect them in court, they make superb witnesses as they are comfortable to testify. My team and I do our best to prevent these heinous crimes. |
However, it is a constant war that we are fighting and I hope that by prosecuting the offenders to the fullest extent of the law will send a clear message that violence against women and children will not be tolerated.
To prosecute cases successful is not an achievement to me, it is each and every human being’s moral duty to fight for justice. It is the most rewarding feeling in the world to turn victims into survivors and to ensure that justice is served. And as long as I have blood in my veins and air in my lungs, I shall proceed to fight this war”.
