Germa Hattingh
National Campaign Owner, Tekkie Tax Manager

I am a mother. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a friend. I am a colleague.

Country Ambassador, Julie B Steynberg: “Germa Hattingh is well-known for her passion to impact lives, this remarkable women belongs on this platform of Change Makers. DMI-SA welcomes her, it is an honor and priviledge to have you on board Germa, who you are makes a huge difference in many lives”.

Germa Hattingh says in her own words: “Thank you; Difference Makers SA, for providing us with this platform to promote the work that we do. I resonate with the dream of this amazing platform:  Difference Makers S.A. A great thank you Julie B Steynberg, the Country Ambassador for the opportunity to be involved in with this wonderful project – a platform to allow the passions of individuals to become the passions of Society. Thank you for providing a platform to be used for the work that we do. “I was taken by surprise when Wilna Grobler (a recent Top 100 SA Difference Maker) approached me with a nomination to become one of the Top 100 SA Difference Makers.  Reconsidering my personal opinion (Titles, acknowledgements and accolades are not part of my makeup – I initially resisted the thought of being nominated, because I am a hands-on, behind the scenes, no limelight kind of person). Then I realised that this is a wonderful project providing a platform for Change Makers, the passion that drives Difference Makers S.A. is my passion too”.

Wilna Grobler : “I love the way Germa thinks and operates when she empowers the 7000 charities connected to her. She is doing this without wanting the credit. She is the "behind the scenes" person making a huge difference in her very unique way”.

My passion: Tekkie Tax, NGO’s - bringing about change and impacting lives. “My passion lies in making a difference in the daily fight that NGOs have to keep their doors open and protect the vulnerable.  That we do through Tekkie Tax – an international fundraising campaign that delivers a service to organisations across a wide spectrum – animals, the elderly, homeless, children, people living with disabilities and education. The real difference makers in this story are Tekkie Tax & NGO’s taking part in the campaigns”.

Projects:  This year, 273 NGO’s both local and nationally and their respective projects benefit from the work that they do.

My story: “As a young Trauma Nurse, Germa specialised in Aviation Health and Rapid Response…a job that was adrenaline-saturated. In 2000, she sustained a serious back injury that ended her exciting career abruptly. This was followed by several back surgeries and movement was very limited. For 3 years, she tried different things but that feeling of fulfilment and job satisfaction kept eluding her. During this time, she was also diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent surgery and treatment. It felt like a never ending battle. By the grace of God, she  is now “clean” for 15 years. Each day remains a day of continued grace for her.

She was involved with a national NGO for 14 years, developing the organisation from a one-room-in-a-house setup to offering NQF level 4, 5 and Diploma training to preschool educators. In 2016, an opportunity came her way to become a co-owner of the campaign, together with SAVF and Epilepsy SA. She also joined the Tekkie Tax team as the National Campaign Manager in the same year. Two years down the line she looked back and knew that the feeling of satisfaction she felt for the past 18 years had returned, refreshed, revived and resuscitated. “To be part of Tekkie Tax is often a very humbling experience”, Germa explained. Within 6 years of existence, Tekkie Tax raised R30.1 million and more than 1,500 local & national organisations benefitted from the funds raised.

She has a beautiful 27-year old daughter, Marissa, who thinks her mother is the best thing since cheese. At school, she was one day asked what would she like to become when she is grown-up. “I want to be like my mother”. That answer placed her in my list of Top 10 difference makers in my life ...😊. She has an amazing life-partner, Barbara, who adores her and treats her like a precious jewel. Germa says, “It is a real blessing when your relationship with the person in your life is happy and fulfilled. She completes me”.
